Santa Rosa Warriors Compete in Archery Tournament

Special to La Feria News

As a Warrior for a mascot, it was only fitting for SRISD students to learn the skill of archery. While archery has been part of the afterschool program in Santa Rosa ISD for over seven years, last year was the first time students competed in an archery tournament making Santa Rosa ISD the first school south of San Antonio to ever compete in the history of State’s National Archery in Schools Program (NASP).

This fall semester, 22 SRISD students competed in the Buffalo Invitational Archery tournament held at Fox Tech High School in San Antonio. Nine Jo Nelson Middle School Students and 13 high school students got a chance to show their “Warrior” skills as they competed with other Texas schools.

Jo Nelson Middle School students proved their true Warrior Pride by winning 2nd place and 3rd place. Two JNMS students tied for 3rd place. Jakyre Caster took 2nd place and Amador de la Garza with Felipe Pacheco tied for 3rd place. Students will compete next at the State Qualifying Tournament, a virtual competition, during the month of January for a chance to qualify for the State competition.

Schools from all over Texas will compete. In these tournaments archery winners not only get bragging rights but also earn valuable scholarship money. Archery is offered in Santa Rosa ISD as part of the STEM program. Similar to other sports, it teaches youth leadership development skills and helps students increase self-confidence. Skills necessary for college and adulthood success.
