LA FERIA – A large attendance in the stands watched on Friday night as the La Feria Lions looked very impressive on both sides of the ball in their first scrimmage against Brownsville St. Joseph.

In the controlled portion of the scrimmage, the Lions outscored St. Joe 5-1, including a breakout 70-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Dorian Hernandez as well as a 45-yard score from Hernandez to senior wingback/receiver Darius Hernandez.

The Lions continued their dominance in the live portion, outscoring Brownsville St. Joe’s Bloodhounds 28-7. One of the many scores was at due by quarterback Dorian Hernandez once again bringing out his speed and running the ball in on a 60-yard keeper.

The second stringers impressed as well. Sophomore backup quarterback Dario Sanchez connected with classmate receiver Derek Perez on a screen pass. Perez showed off some flashy moves and scored his first touchdown on the varsity squad.

After the game, Head Coach Oscar Salinas was very happy with the outcome in the Lions first scrimmage.

“We played very well offensively and defensively. I really think the kids worked hard to prepare for this game.”

“Our offensive and defensive lines played very well tonight and that was a pro. A con is finding depth, but we’ll find that quickly, but overall the kids did great tonight.”

The Lions’ second scrimmage will be played against Brownsville Lopez in Brownsville next Friday before opening up the season with the Raymondville Bearkats coming to Lions Stadium.
