Santa Rosa Warriors Place at Archery Tournament in San Antonio

Special to La Feria News

Over 40 Santa Rosa Warrior Archery Club students competed in this year’s Buffalo Invitational Archery Tournament held at Fox Tech High School in San Antonio. Last year was their first time ever to compete. This year four archers placed with Christian Mendoza placing 1st and Marc Espinoza placed 3rd in the High School. Ashly Melchor placed 3rd in the middle school division and Sergio Ramirez placed 3rd in the elementary division. This is the first year the SRISD’s Elma E. Barrera Elementary Archery Club students compete.

Archery is an activity supported by the district’s regular school day program as well as the afterschool program. This activity helps students develop youth leadership skills and increases self-confidence. Skills necessary for success in school and life. As one SRHS archer explained to a group of audience at a recent Youth Health Summit “Archery has taught me to focus on my goals in life. My instructors tell me that if I do the right stands, anchor, and aim correctly, I will reach my goals in life” Maria Melchor SRHS Junior. The slogan for the Warrior Archery Club is “The Flight of the Arrow depends on the Attitude of the Archer”.

This activity is funded by the Texas Parks and Wildlife grant secured by Alberto Trevino, Afterschool Project Director. Mr. Trevino has been instructing archery in Santa Rosa for the past nine years. However, now he has over eight certified BAI NASP archery instructors working with the afterschool program and CJD Youth Leadership Project. Santa Rosa has been instrumental in helping other surrounding school districts get certified and start archery clubs across South Texas as far as Laredo.

Once a sport that occurred only north of San Antonio, it is now possible for Valley schools to host their own tournaments in the area. Archers will get a chance to qualify and compete at the State Championship Tournament and Scholarship Competition in Belton, Texas this spring. This year Santa Rosa ISD will include a 3D archery program. For more information on National Archery In Schools Program, contact Texas Parks & Wildlife or Alberto Trevino at SRISD.
