Each of the hundreds of youngsters that showed up at the annual La Feria Police Department Toy Giveaway received a toy within days of Christmas and all left with smiles on their faces as well as their parents.

The toy giveaway was held Friday, Dec. 21 on the side walk of city hall as scores of children and some teens formed a long line that went around the building.

The three-hour long activity began at 4:30 and ended after all the toys were distributed.

Police Chief Cesar Diaz said the give-away could not have happened without the participation of all those people, businesses and organizations who contributed toward its success.

“On behalf of the city and PD I would like to express our gratitude to everybody that helped us,” he said. “There were a lot of people, businesses and the school district that gave us donations.”

Diaz estimated some 1,300 toys were given out just in time for Christmas.

Among those who received toys were the Torres and the Vegas children.

Denise Torres said they brought their two sons and daughter to the event.

“This is nice,” she said. “Our children are happy and we are happy too.”

Torres said this is the third year they made it to the toy giveaway.

Crystal Arriazola attended with her four children.

She said they are all thankful for getting the opportunity to get free toys.

Diaz said the toy giveaway is getting bigger and bigger every year.

The police chief said he would like to thank everybody for their donations and participation in this year’s toy giveaway.

Among them were grocery and so-called dollar stores, recreational vehicle parks, wrecker companies, elementary schools and a number of local businesses and churches.
