Eight hundred and thirty one of the 3,545 registered voters in the City of La Feria went to the polls to elect a new mayor. Victor Gonzalez, Jr. was chosen for the post to complete the unexpired term of former Mayor Steve Brewer. Gonzalez will be sworn-in at a special meeting of the commission Monday, February 3.

Thanking his supporters, Gonzalez added, “now that most of the city’s infrastructure is in place to include newly annexed areas. La Feria will be included in the future growth of Cameron County. We must tap into available resources to bring retail and industrial business which will bring jobs to our local economy.

We must continue to bring affordable housing and continue to increase and improve our park system and our quality of life. I must admit that there are abandoned and dilapidated buildings and we will continue with the demolition and beautifying our city. I want to thank our Fire, Police, Public Works Departments, Chamber of Commerce, our entire office staff, city manager, committees, boards and volunteers for all the hard efforts to make our city great.I am proud to be part of the city’s growth and being your public servant since being elected in May of 2000”.

The unofficial results of the election tallied 498 votes for Gonzalez and 323 for his opponent Mayor Pro-Tem Lori Weaver. Five hundred fifty five residents voted early and 266 waited for Election Day.

Gonzalez is now retired and is married to Juanita Najar-Gonzalez. He is a La Feria native and a 1971 LFISD graduate.

The May municipal election will called to fill Gonzalez’ spot on the commission and Mayor Pro-Tem Weaver and Commissioner Angelica Baldivia’s seat are also up for re-election.

Filing for those positions is open until Feb. 28.
