‘Let it Snow!’ Selected as Theme for 2014 City of La Feria Lighted Christmas Parade

16th Annual Parade Slated for 5:30 p.m., Saturday, December 13

Valleyites might get to see freak snowstorm this winter because the La Feria Events Committee has selected the theme “Let it Snow!” for this year’s Christmas Parade. The selection is always made early to give float builders and participants time to put their thinking cap on and come up with fantastic ideas to wow the crowd and the judges.

The parade is held down Main Street from the library and continues to the high school parking lot where the Winter Wonderland festival continues for evening entertainment. The festival hosts the Tiny/’Lil Mr. & Miss La Feria Winter Wonderland Competition, has tons of inflatable rides and pictures with Santa, plus a variety of festival foods.

Float entries compete for cash prizes of $500 for first place, $200 for second place and $125 for third place. The committee is always proud to see the impressive floats, bands, Winter Texans and organizations that put so much effort into their entries.

Before the parade, the committee is finalizing plans for Halloween in the Park which will be held Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Veteran’s Memorial Park. There were more than 77 participants in the Costume Contest last year, so organizers will plan for even more ghosts and goblins and lots more candy. Vendors and business representatives are needed for this event to offer assorted game booths like ring toss, face painting or the very popular cake walk last year sponsored by a school group. A new train ride has been signed up for the Halloween festivities. As always, the committee appreciates the La Feria student volunteers at all the events that help to make these activities available to our community, most at no charge.

Not long after that, it is time for Lighting of the Tree in La Feria on Thursday, November 13 at 5:30 p.m. Santa Claus shows up with goody bags for the kids at this event where the Community Christmas Tree at city hall is lit with music from area school bands and performances by local elementary students. Everyone is encouraged to bring a waterproof ornament for the city tree. Classroom teachers should call city hall to sign up their classes.

Early December will bring the Christmas Card, Home & Yard, Winter Visitor Park and Business Window Decorating contests. Please check with city hall or the city website, www.cityoflaferia.com, to get registration information. Judges are needed for all these contests so call Tabitha at 797-2261 if you are interested.

Last, but far from least, don’t forget to make your 2015 calendar for the Fiesta de La Feria which is always scheduled for the last Saturday in February. This annual event will soar to new levels as it will also be the community celebration of La Feria’s 100th Birthday! More volunteers are needed for this event so if you would like to just help with ideas or you are a worker bee…the Committee Needs You! Please call Tabitha to find out how to get involved with this exciting project.

Check the city website or call city hall for more information on all this community activities provided for great family fun.
