La Feria Churches Partner With Schools To Serve Local Children

Methodist & Presbyterian churches work together on Serve Our Schools project

LA FERIA, Texas – On Aug. 30, two La Feria churches worked together to make improvements to Sam Houston Elementary School. Volunteers from First United Methodist Church of La Feria and New Hope Presbyterian Church of La Feria began constructing steps, cork display strips and coat racks to be installed in the elementary school.

This annual service project is part of the Serve Our Schools program, launched in August 2012 by the Methodist church. The Sam Houston Elementary School improvement project will be completed and presented Sept. 20.

The church and student volunteers who were not building that day began collecting coats, shoes, socks, and underwear to be distributed to needy children at all four La Feria elementary schools. They also prepared the weekend backpacks for some of the children at David Sanchez Elementary School. The Weekend Backpack Program allows needy children to take home non-perishable food every Friday afternoon, enough to sustain them through the weekend.
