LFISD Neighborhood Schools Reconfiguration Under Consideration
- Updated: October 24, 2014
La Feria Independent School District administration has been researching a possible reconfiguration of elementary schools in the district. An information item was presented to the Board of Trustees on October 6, 2014, on this issue. The design being evaluated is to establish three elementary schools with the grade span of prekindergarten through 4th grade at Sam Houston, David G. Sanchez, and C. E. Vail Elementary Schools. This change would not affect Noemi Dominguez Elementary, W. B. Green Jr. High, or La Feria High School.
Information regarding the factors involved in establishing a neighborhood school configuration for our elementary schools has been reviewed and discussed with campus administration. Individual campus meetings with teachers were held at Sam Houston Elementary, David G. Sanchez Elementary, and C. E. Vail Elementary during the week of October 14. Two evening community information sessions will be held to provide an opportunity for parents and community members to receive information on the concept of Neighborhood Schools. The first evening session will be held on October 27, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. at the La Feria High School library. There will be second community information session scheduled at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, November 3 at Lee Facility. All parents and community members are invited to attend these information sessions.
A change in the grade configuration of our schools would positively impact our students and would set the stage for substantial achievement. With our current configuration, students often have a significant achievement loss during each transitional year. Students who make fewer transitions need less time to make up for achievement losses caused by transitions. Instead of students attending three different schools before the 5th grade, they would attend one. Teachers would also have common planning time and vertical curriculum alignment opportunities leading to improved student success.
