First United Methodist Church of La Feria Celebrates 100 Years
- Updated: November 14, 2014
Public Invited to Special Centennial Service
LA FERIA – To celebrate 100 years in La Feria, First United Methodist Church of La Feria will hold a combined worship service Sunday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. with Rio Texas Bishop James Dorff giving the sermon. The public is not only welcome but encouraged to attend.
Though the church building opened its doors in the 1940s, 1914 is the year the church first formed in La Feria.
The first church in La Feria opened in 1914. Known as Union Church, people of all Christian denominations worshiped together. In the beginning, the Methodist congregation had approximately 20 members. Thirty years later, the congregation had more than 300 members.
In the mid-1940s, the Methodists built a sanctuary on its present Main Street location. The church building underwent more construction in the mid-1950s. FUMC-LF was dedicated in 1955, and Methodist Christians have worshiped in the same building ever since.
FUMC-LF is located at 331 S. Main St., next to Tiny Town Park. For more information on the centennial service, call (956) 797-1393.
