La Feria W. B. Green Junior High students, Joshua Ruedas and Elizabeth Barrera, were part of the design team that earned first place in the robotic design model competition at the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) 2015 Summer camp.

Joshua and Elizabeth were honored during the closing ceremonies where representatives from the University of Nebraska Transportation Center, Texas A&M University Transportation Institute, local media, and national representatives from the US Department of Transportation were in attendance.

The UTCRS hosted its Summer Camp to increase awareness of careers in transportation engineering for students in 3rd through 12th grade. The camp promoted science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, with a focus on railway safety.

At the camp, students had the opportunity to participate in interactive, hands-on activities for one-week in which the various modes of transportation engineering, with a focus on railway safety, were highlighted. Additionally, students were exposed to current research projects to stimulate their interest in engineering and as a potential career path.

The camp supports historically under-served and underrepresented students with limited opportunities. Funding for the 2015 Summer Camp was made possible by grant activities within the University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) funded by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology, U.S. Department of Transportation from UTC Program grant: DTRT13-G-UTC59.
