Nearly 350 job seekers turn out for 2nd Annual La Feria Job Fair

LA FERIA – Nearly 350 people turned out for the 2nd Annual La Feria Job Fair Oct. 22 at First United Methodist Church of La Feria. That afternoon the small church was packed with 24 area employers and hundreds of people looking for either seasonal, part-time or full-time work.

Job seekers were not only able to interview with many area employers, they were able to fill out and submit their online applications at the computer station set up by Workforce Solutions Cameron. People of all ages and from all areas of the Rio Grande Valley were at the event.

Adam Outlaw of Harlingen was glad he attended the job fair.

“I got great response,” Outlaw said. “I got a couple of jobs leads, and I have a job interview lined up.”

For Outlaw, it is challenging to find a job because he does not own a car, and the nearest bus stop is several miles from his house. At the job fair, however, he was able to speak with a representative from Valley Metro who will try to work with him should his job interview pan out.

The La Feria Job Fair is the only known job fair in the Rio Grande Valley to be coordinated by a church.

“You don’t have to work for an agency to hold a job fair in your community. You just need to set a date and invite area employers,” said job fair coordinator Andi Atkinson. “If there is a need for jobs in the area you live in, the people will show up.”
