Dominguez’s Mad Science Night was Out of This World

On Tuesday, October 27, Noemi Dominguez Elementary hosted another successful Annual Mad Science Night and this year’s theme was “Out of this World.” Science was everywhere. From the oldest Scientist to the youngest Explorer, everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves. As they stepped into the Mad Lab, they were greeted by Mrs. Najar. As you walked through the Hall of Science, color lights would light up your way. As usual the sensory lab was everyone’s favorite.

5th Grade Scientists could be found in the A-Wing demonstrating lab experiments and teaching science concepts to the audience. The Mad Scientists from Mrs. Dilia Sanchez’s science class presented 2 Terrific Experiments: The Walking Water Experiment consisted of colored water that walked along paper towels to fill an empty glass and The Amazing Arrow Trick was an arrow that moved to a particular distance behind a glass causing the arrow to appear as if it reversed itself. Rikki Hernandez, Joseph Ochoa, Peyton Garcia, Alexa Alvarez, Jada Morales, and Osiel Serrato did an amazing job teaching about capillary action as the colored water walked and how light passing from one material to another refracts causing images to reverse.

Ethan Avila, Noah Vento, Tristan Lopez and Jhonan Alvarado from Mrs. Hinojosa’s class demonstrated the Singing Dry Ice while Jaycee Loredo, Thalia Conde, Sabrina Azua and Victoria Aguirre taught Making Makeup with Colored Pencils. Mrs. Rios’ Claudio Gonzalez, Alejandro Borges, Evelynn Machado and Allison Garza made Lava In A Cup. Leslie Garcia, Alyssa Hernandez, Isabella Alvarez and Mikayla Martinez explained Disappearing Water. Mrs. Juarez’s students Aaliyah Arredonde, Lucky Diaz, Rolando Garcia, and Madison Granquist did the Dry Ice Crystal Ball while Genaro Jaramillo, Leandra Fernandez, Madison Cano and Brandon Abrego demonstrated the Screaming Balloon.

6th grade would like to thank the Texas Space Grant Consortium for the workshops, activities, and certification that allowed Mrs. Colson to borrow the NASA Exhibit which included the Apollo Helmet, Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Glove, Moon Rocks, and Space Food from the Johnson Space Center. Students were allowed to try on and take pictures wearing the Apollo Helmet and EVA glove in front of the 6th grade Pre-AP Space Science Models that the students did for their 2nd six weeks project which decorated the E-Wing. 6th grade would also like to thank Mr. Snakenberg for allowing us to borrow his extensive meteorite collection.

Four of the 6th grade science standards are layers of the earth, space exploration, celestial objects, and gravity. The Pre-AP science students were allowed to pick the subtopic they wanted to research, to create a model, and make a presentation. Kida Johnson created a model depicting the layers of the earth; Melisa Lucio and Sylvia Brown showed us how rockets defy gravity; Caleb Lara built a model of International Space Station and created a comic to go with it; Angelina Trevino and Allison Rosales took us to the moon; Brandon Villanueva showed us the difference between a meteoroid, meteor, and meteorite; Alejandro Rodriguez and Tomas Navarro made a 3D Mars and built a model of the Spirit Rover; and Corbyn Alvarado built a model of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and created a comic to tell us a bit about it. Ian Magallanes drew the Sun, Aaron Trevino created the inner planets; Daniel Gonzalez modeled the asteroid belt; Saturino Cantu and Daniel Aranda created the outer planets; and Corbin Cantu made the Galilean Moons.

Mr. Andres Martinez’s future engineers who included Zoee Perez, Adriana Alvarez, Amanda Martinez, Jordi Olivarez, and John Rodriguez, were happy and prepared to entertain and educate everyone who ventured into E-109. The students were very professional and knowledgeable during their instruction and demonstrations which amazed all our guests. The kids became little experts in a manner of two very intense hours of science demonstrations with the Two Wheeled Balloon Powered Car and the Roto-Copter Drop. Mr. Joe Martinez’s students taught the science behind and helped their audience make Mini Pom Pom Launchers and Foam Rockets. Ace Benavides, Vincent Chapa, John Guajardo, Nehaniah Gutierrez, and Joel Reyes assisted with the Mini Pom Pom Launchers, while Kirsten Martinez, Delilah Romayor, Anahi Magdaleno, and Sylvia Brown helped with the Foam Rockets.

Mrs. Colson’s girls got techie. Angelina Trevino and Allison Rosales taught about the Apollo 11 Moon Landing using the Walk on the Moon app. Madison Rasttaster and Haley Jimenez demonstrated how to work Google Moon, while Jimena Salazar showed people how to view real satellite images using Google Mars. Mrs. Colson’s students are excited to welcome Google to Dominguez Elementary Friday, Nov. 6th. Google Expedition’s Pioneer Program is coming to take Dominguez Elementary’s 6th grade science classes “To the Moon with the Google Lunar XPR” and Mars “Spirit: The Life of a Robot.” Google is going to teach Mrs. Colson how to lead her students on a Google Expedition using the iPad app and teach her students how to properly use Google Cardboard. Dominguez 6th graders are roaring and ready to go!
