Racing Fever Rages at Kenwood RV Park

It wasn’t the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but for the revved-up residents of La Feria’s Kenwood RV Park it was a great race day last week. They turned out in droves to line the designated raceway in the Winter Tourist haven.. They brought folding chairs, umbrellas, sunglasses and floppy hats to take in all the excitement and anticipation of the championship golf cart races.

Eight souped-up entries had signed up for the race. There were to be seven heats to finally declare a winner. The tension mounted as the steely-eyed drivers lined up for each high-speed duel.

The crowd went wild as Mike Todd, the Park Activities Director, fired the shot that started the first pair racing down the raceway. The roar of the engines and smell of burning rubber wafted through the gallery of race fans as the golf carts whizzed past the cheering spectators. Some were seated, others standing, others were loudly rooting for their favorite contender.

Seven heats later, the top three drivers were announced: The third-place winner, Pat Lindstrom of Aurora, Illinois, stepped forward to accept his trophy. There was a roar of applause. The second place prize went to Lawrence Ferguson of Ansley, Nebraska–more applause. Finally, accepting the First Place trophy was Michael Jackson of Enid, Mississippi. The crowd cheered wildly as they applauded the winners and all the participants in this first-of-a-kind event at Kenwood RV Park.

The Kenwood RV Park golf cart race was the brain-child of its Activities Director, Mike Todd. “From what we’ve seen here today, it insures that this is going to be a regular event in our activities each season for our park residents,“ Todd said, adding,

“We are going to expand and add a miniature-size race event for remote-control model cars on a race track that we are building in the park We are also working on a bicycle and tricycle race course for next year.”

Director Mike Todd is well-known to many in the Valley because of his other passion—Rodeo and livestock shows. Todd has been the Chairman of the Los Fresnos PRCA Rodeo and Concert for the past 13 years. He, along with 11 other directors, was one of the founding fathers of the now nationally famous annual Los Fresnos Rodeo and Livestock show. This will be their 27th year. The remaining four directors of the original group are: Mike Todd, Chairman; George Gomez, Vice-chairman; Carl Macomb, Treasurer; and Carlos Salazar, Director. The Rodeo committee began with 12 officers–It now has grown to 27 directors.

So, there you have it: Racing fever is raging at Kenwood Park. Its RV residents have one more reason to spend the winter season with the folks at Kenwood RV Park and enjoy the activities dreamed up by their creative Activities Director, Mike Todd.

The director will soon announce some future events that will be open to the public, including crafts and arts shows and garage sales. They will be announced in LA FERIA NEWS—watch for it.
