RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS  – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley this year celebrates the 15th anniversary of HESTEC –Hispanic Engineering, Science, and Technology (HESTEC) Week – Oct. 2 through Oct. 8, with events on the Edinburg Campus and in Brownsville and Harlingen.

Thousands of middle and high school students, educators and parents will be able to hear engaging presentations by world-renowned speakers, participate in interactive educational exhibits, take part in dynamic robotics competitions, and much more.

The exhibit, A T. Rex Named Sue, is scheduled to open September 29, and features a cast of the 42 feet long, 12 feet high, and 3,500 pound dinosaur. The model is the keystone piece of this traveling exhibition which also includes free-standing interactive pods, touchable replicas, video footage, and bilingual text panels with scientific content from the Field Museum paleontologists.

One of the highlights this year is a return visit by Sue, the dinosaur, the largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rex ever unearthed. The exhibit opens Sept. 29 and will be on display at UTRGV through Jan. 8.

This year, HESTEC is expanding for the first time to the cities of Brownsville and Harlingen. The U.S. Navy Band will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the TSC Arts Center. Robotics Day will take place on Thursday, Oct. 6 at the Jacob Brown Auditorium on the Texas Southmost College campus in Brownsville. And the U.S. Navy SeaPerch Challenge will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, at the Harlingen CISD Aquatics Center.

The Sept. 29 press conference will present information on HESTEC Week’s major events, special guests, keynote speakers, highlights, and an announcement on the Community Day entertainment lineup.

Following the press conference, members of the media will be able to get a sneak preview of the Sue exhibit.
