This year marks nine decades of the national spelling bee

Special to La Feria News

Every year, students from all walks of life have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, one of the nation’s oldest and most iconic competitions. They progress from classroom to cafeteria, from auditorium to civic center, delighting friends, family, sponsors and fans, just as millions of other students have done before them.

The National Spelling Bee began in 1925 with nine contestants. It was sponsored by the Louisville Courier-Journal, which had conducted a statewide match to find the best grade-school spellers in Kentucky, and then decided to extend a challenge to other newspapers to choose their own champions to take part in a spelling showdown in Washington, D.C., to determine a national champion.

In 1941, Scripps took over sponsorship of the National Spelling Bee. There was no Scripps National Spelling Bee during the war years of 1943–45.

Co-champions were declared in 1950, 1957, 1962, and 2014. Of the 88 champions, 45 have been girls and 43 have been boys.

The program experienced steady growth between the 1920s and the 1970s, and between 1980 and 1990 the number of participants doubled. In recent years the program underwent a second growth spurt—and a significant surge in popularity—thanks to live primetime coverage on ABC; live daytime coverage on ESPN; the Oscar-nominated documentary, Spellbound; the critically-acclaimed motion picture, Akeelah and the Bee; and the Tony award-winning musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

The 29th Annual Rio Grande Valley Regional Spelling Bee, featuring competitors from throughout the region, will take place March 4, 2017 at 9 a.m. at South Texas College in Weslaco. Students range from the third to the eighth grade.

The winner of the Regional Spelling Bee will have the opportunity to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Bee Week 2017 will take place May 28–June 3, 2017 within the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

Admission to the onstage rounds of the 2017 Bee are free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis.
