Commissioner Hoff Appointed New Mayor Pro-Tem, City Agrees to Participate in Road to Recycling

The Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council’s Road-to-Recycling regional tire collection project addresses the problem of illegally dumped tires throughout the lower valley. All three counties with the cooperation of several cities throughout the region will participate. The La Feria city commission held a regularly scheduled city meeting on Tuesday, June 13, in the La Feria city commission meeting room. Following the usual protocol of a city meeting (invocation, pledge of allegiance and determination of quorum) Mayor pro-tem, Esmeralda Lozano, called the meeting to order in the absence of Mayor Maldonado.
Following the approval of the minutes of the previous city meeting (May 23), Commissioner Julian Guevara Jr. made a motion nominating Commissioner Eric Hoff as the new Mayor Pro-Tempore.
“The opportunity is given to one of the members of the commission. The mayor pro-tem’s responsibilities are a little bit more than the city commissioners,” said city manager, Jaime Sandoval, about the position. Commissioner Guevara’s motion was strongly supported and passed.
In an effort to clean the community, the city commission approved an interlocal agreement with the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council to participate in the “Road-to-Recycling” regional tire collection project.
“This is an initiative to pick up as many tires in the Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy counties. This will be a good opportunity for all the communities to participate in this cleanup,” said Sandoval.
On Saturday, July 1, the City of La Feria will be hosting their eleventh annual Independence Day Celebration at the Veterans Memorial Park. The commission approved an ordinance allowing the consumption of alcohol at the complex for the day of the celebration. Alcohol will not be sold at the festival, but the public is welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages.
A portion of East First Street will have a new speed limit of ten miles per hour. The current speed limit is thirty miles per hour, but after receiving a request from residents in the area, the commission approved an ordinance reducing the speed to ten miles per hour from Parker Road to the cul-de-sac.
After the commission emerged from executive session, the meeting was adjourned.
The next regularly scheduled city meeting will be on Tuesday, June 27, in the city commission meeting room located at 115 E. Commercial Avenue.
