With less than a year of existence, an enthusiastic band of 5-6 year-old girls is making a name for La Feria in the 2017 Pony League Softball Competition. They and their coaches are all from La Feria and call themselves the South Texas Storm, and they have their medals to prove it.

They have qualified to compete in the 2017 Pony League Softball World Series taking place in Laredo, Texas this month. They will be battling against top-rated teams from San Benito, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Austin and Laredo.

The South Texas Storm qualified to take part in the World Series by winning lst place trophies in several fiercely-fought invitational 2017 Shetland Girls SoftBall Tournaments held earlier this year. Teams involved in the Invitation Tournaments were Upper and Lower Valley teams including Kingsville and Corpus Christi.

The games were played at the Harlingen Sports Complex. The girls, however, developed their skills by hard work and lots of practice sessions with their coaches at the A.J. Wilson Softball Park in La Feria. Their coaches are Daniel Elizondo, Raymond Moreno, and Jerome Stinson.

Fred Salazar Jr., team spokesperson, said that any local citizens who would like to show support for these young ladies who are putting La Feria on the map, can do so by visiting South Texas Storm on Facebook.
