The La Feria City Commission held a special meeting on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. to receive input on the proposed City budget for fiscal year 2017-2018.

The hearing was open to the public however public attendance was scant – the only person present to offer public input was Mrs. Gloria Casas.

The City Commission then heard from the City’s Finance Director during the workshop portion of the meeting to discuss budget items for fiscal year 2017-2018 and some areas in which the City could boost revenue for the upcoming year.

Some areas covered were an increase is sales tax revenue approximately $10,000 above the previous year, a change in government collections firm that would more aggressively pursue collections on items such as delinquent tax payments or unpaid citations due the City, and a 25% reduction of all controllable expenditures by the City.

Also, discussed was the availability of grant monies through Operation Border Star which would increase the police department’s patrols without burdening the City’s budget.
