The City Commission met at their regular meeting on Tuesday, October 24th. After going through the initial meeting protocols Mayor Maldonado reminded the audience of the Halloween Night Candy Giveaway at the Police station scheduled for Halloween night during the announcements portion of the meeting.

The commission then moved on to the consent agenda and approved the minutes from the October 10th meeting.

The commission then approved to provide a letter of support for a proposed water laboratory and training center here in the Valley a project that, according to City Manager Jaime Sandoval, would bring services to areas that currently have no service. Mr. Eliud Medina then presented information about Southern Industrial Careers Center located at 901 S. Expressway 83 here in La Feria.

SICC is a vocational training center dedicated to teaching industrial trades in welding and fabrication. SICC hosts the best training methods in an industrial facility with highly experienced instructors and comes with a Career Services Department ready to help students with customized resumes, job applications and local employer connections.

The commission thanked Mr. Medina and were pleased to hear the information presented. Action was then taken on Resolution 2017-25 to accept construction completions by Saenz Brothers Construction, LLC. of the sanitary sewer improvements for Main St., Strader Ln., Kansas City Rd., and Parker Rd.

The commission also approved applying for the Rifle Resistant Body Armor Grant Program under Resolution 2017-26.Sandoval stated that, prompted by the recent shootings of police officers that took place in Dallas, the City of La Feria applied and qualified for up to ten body armor suits through this grant program.

After the commission approved the closing of Commercial Ave. from Main St. to East St. for the annual Lighting of the Tree celebration they entered into closed session to discuss the City’s legal duties and obligations arising from the assignment contract proposed by the La Feria Irrigation District.

The meeting was then adjourned after the matters discussed in closed session were approved.

CORRECTION

This is a correction to a statement written in the October 18, 2017 La Feria News article under the headline “La Feria City Commission Suspends Public Comments”.

In the article in paragraph 2 line 7 the statement reads “but the commission voted to suspend public comments for the evening…”, this is incorrect. We inaccurately stated “voted to suspend” which leads the reader to conclude that the issue of which the public comments were about was an item on the meeting agenda that the commission could hear and take action on.

This was not the case. The commission could not have accepted public comments that evening because the issue regarding the loss of code enforcement and animal control personnel due to budget cuts was not on the meeting agenda as an item that the commission could hear and or take action on.

This is clearly stated on the Public Comments Registration Form procedure #3 for citizen participation which states “Your comments are required to be limited to agenda items only.”

We hope this clarification is helpful. We sincerely apologize and regret any inconvenience this may have caused. In addition, the City of La Feria assures citizens that animal control and code enforcement duties will continue with other employees.

Be assured that we at La Feria News strive to serve our community in the best way possible and thank our loyal readers for their continued support.
