Don’t expect to drive along the downtown area of Main Street during most of the day on Saturday, Feb. 15.

That’s because several blocks of the city’s busiest thoroughfare will be closed to vehicular traffic while people celebrate and enjoy the annual Fiesta de la Feria.

The city council approved Ordinance 2030-1 at is Jan. 14 meeting. It called for closing a number of streets to allow the fiesta celebration that extends from just on the edge of Business 77 to near the city’s municipal pool to the south.

Also several streets going from east to west are also closed as vendors, food booths and other amenities are available to the public.

The fiesta is one of the city’s largest events of the year held to provide something to do for the community and visitors alike.

Several musical groups play and a classic car show are among the many events held throughout the day.

In other actions, the council approved to allow the Cameron County Election Administrator to run the general election scheduled for May 2.

Three council seats will be up for grabs in the election.

The spots are currently held by council members Donato Garcia Commissioner Place 3, Julian Guevara Commissioner Place 4 and Esmeralda Lozano Commissioner Place 5.

The council held a final hearing concerning an application to be submitted to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Community grant not to exceed $5 million for street improvements, a new police station and a new public works building.
