Teen Topics: The Dreaded Interview

Many people often go through their first interview while they are teenagers. Any job you may apply for, whether it be at McDonald’s or at an office will require an interview. Many seniors in high school this year will also be interviewing with various colleges to increase their chance of admission. However, unlike the dread that most people feel when thinking about an interview, it can actually be a very good thing that can end up working in your favor. An interview is a great opportunity to let your interviewer see what kind of person you are beyond your resume.

Presentation is of utmost importance during an interview. Just think how you would feel about someone who wanted to work with you or go to your college if they showed up to interview in sweats and a t-shirt. You wouldn’t think very highly of them, right? To show professionalism it’s usually best to wear a button down shirt with dress pants, and for girls to keep their hair out of their eyes. This look exudes dependability and maturity, which are traits the interviewer is most likely looking for.

Practice is usually a good thing before any interview. A simple Google search can tell you some likely questions. Think about what interests you about the job/college, what your strengths/weaknesses are, and any questions that you may have for the person interviewing you. These are topics that are usually common to every interview. In my experience with interviews, which isn’t all that much, interviews are more like conversations. They want to get to know you as an individual, so don’t be afraid to show them who you are!
