DR. JAMES CASTILLO TO SPEAK ON PALLIATIVE & HOSPICE CARE AT STROKE SUPPORT MEET

Dr. James Castillo, who is board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, will speak at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen Aug. 20.
HARLINGEN – Dr. James W. Castillo II will speak on “Palliative Care: To Cure Sometimes, To Relieve Often, To Comfort Always”, during a H.O.P.E. Stroke Support Group meeting on Tuesday, August 20, at 6 p.m. at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen (in the Woodward Conference Center, on the first floor of the hospital’s South Tower).
The meeting is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided.
Dr. Castillo will discuss the concepts of palliative care and hospice care, to promote an understanding of how these types of care can help provide a different approach to the treatment of advanced illnesses. Other topics that will be discussed include advance directives, living wills, the use of CPR in patients with advanced illnesses, and setting goals of care.
Dr. Castillo attended the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Upon graduation, he entered the inaugural class of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio’s Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen. Once he became Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Castillo helped to build the Hospitalist Program at Valley Baptist-Harlingen, while also serving as the Medical Director for Odyssey Hospice. He served as the Hospitalist Program Medical Director until 2010 when he became Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and established the Palliative Care Consultation Service, serving patients at Valley Baptist-Harlingen and Valley Baptist-Brownsville.
