Santa Rosa ISD’s ACE Program offers Family Night to Parents

The annual Lights-On Afterschool event happens in October across the country. This event commemorates the importance and value afterschool programs bring to communities, especially those that are limited in offering students with activities afterschool.

Santa Rosa ISD’s 21st Century Community Learning Center’s grant known as ACE – Afterschool Centers on Education has brought many opportunities for students and their families to come together during the past four years. One of these opportunities is the annual MUM Night/Family Night that is held in October. As the event to celebrate Lights-On Afterschool, the ACE program offers families (parents and children) an opportunity to build a Mum or garter one evening held at the high school fine arts building. Over 100 parents and their children came together to design and build a ready to wear MUM or garter during the upcoming Homecoming game.

It is not uncommon to see fathers and mothers working with their children gluing, stapling, and taping raw materials into a fine Warrior or Braves spirited MUM or garter. Impressive is to see the family working together putting the ribbons and other pieces together to create a customized piece of accessory for their children. While being treated to refreshments, a visual presentation of the program overview and latest evaluation results is shared with the parents.

Customer satisfaction surveys are also administered to solicit program improvement and assessment feedback. Survey results from this survey indicate a 94 – 97 percent agreement that the ACE program has had an impact on student’s grades, behavior, attendance, promotion, graduation and community in general. Evaluation data was shared recently by Alberto Trevino, the ACE director, at the recent Texas Association of School Board Conference in Dallas, Texas. The Santa Rosa ISD School Board, school administration and staff have fully supported the ACE program throughout the grant years. ACE will have many other opportunities for parents to engage with their children’s education throughout the school year.
