Fiesta de La Feria Centennial Celebration Expanded to Two Days
- Updated: February 6, 2015
Historical Videos & Displays added to the regular line-up of Live Bands, Car Show & Contests
The City of La Feria will host a two-day event that will celebrate not only the annual Fiesta de La Feria, but also the founding of the community in 1915. The huge downtown street party will be held Friday, February 27 from noon until 10 p.m. and Saturday, February 28 from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m.
To commemorate the Centennial, interview video taping began this past week of longtime residents of the city. These historical stories of La Feria will be shared with the public during the Fiesta Celebration in the Chaparral building located on Main Street just down from the newspaper office. The building will also have historical displays gathered from local residents.
Betty Jo Dunlap, Eva Menchaca, David Zuniga, Judge Salas, Edward & Mary Ann Bauer, Jim & Katherine Gamble, Steve Wolf & Joe Wolf, Flora Deli Tamez , Rita Schreiber, Rosa Guerrero, Arnulfo Rangel, and Frances Philip are already scheduled to do their interviews. Others who will be asked to participate at this time include: Carlos Cantu, Tom Caruso, Gustavo & Josefina Cisneros, Desiderio Zamora, Leonard Zimmer, Grady Bal, Tony Guevarra, Alpha Turner, Mary Gilday Lever, Amparo Verduzco, Steve Villarreal, Lala Gavito, Mrs. A.J. Wilson, Jacquelyn Neese Lackey, Geneviva Sloan, Skeets Betts, Joe Hernandez, Dominga Villarreal, Moore Matthews, Alex Solis, and Tavo Rubio. The interviews should be an interesting trip down memory lane and a great way to capture some great old stories about life in La Feria through the years.
The La Feria High School Ballet Folklorico will have several performances during the two days and the live bands have lots of variety from Tejano to country and everywhere in between. A special Native American performance is also on the schedule.
Contests set for this year’s event include the Tiny/Lil’/Jr. Mr. & Miss Fiesta de La Feria Competition, art competitions, coloring contest, pie, cupcake and salsa competitions and tons of activities for the kids. If you are interested in participating as either a contestant or vendor now is the time to get registration forms and information from the city offices, checking online at www.cityoflaferia.com or by calling 797-2261.
