Lions Open Up District Play With a Win
- Updated: October 23, 2015
by Coach Jaime Acuna
The La Feria Lions improved their overall record to 4 – 2 overall and more importantly 1 – 0 in district by defeating the Grulla Gators 27 – 7 on Friday night, October 9th, in Rio Grande City. The Lions jumped on the Gators early on a long touchdown pass from quarterback Isaac Galpin to wide receiver Isaiah Martinez and never looked back.
The Lion offense used their no huddle offense to dismantle the Gator defense. The up tempo pace was something that the Gators struggled with as the game went on and ultimately wore them out. Running back Russ Gonzalez paced the Lion offense by running the ball effectively and controlling the clock. The defense was dominating all game long as well.
The Grulla offense was out of sync all night long because of the constant pressure from the Lion D. Damian Canales led the Lion defense with 12 tackles and 1 sack. Ryan Puente also did his job to stop the Gator offense by recording 9 tackles and recording 2 sacks. Senior linebacker Randy Cantu returned from injury to play his first full game of the year and recorded 9 tackles with 5 tackles for a loss.
The Lions returned many players from injuries and showed just how deep they are on both sides of the ball. The Lions will now face the Hidalgo Pirates at Lion Stadium on Friday, October 16. Please come out and support these young men as they work toward their goal of winning a district title.
