STEMs Students Learn About Underwater Robotics
- Updated: November 6, 2015
Students in the Santa Rosa High School Afterschool/CJD STEM’s program had an opportunity to compete for the first time in the SEAPERCH Robotics competition during the HESTEC event held at UT-RGV.
Sponsored by the U.S. Navy, the SEAPERCH Robotics competition is a national competition designed to get students excited and interested in underwater robotics. Five Santa Rosa high school students researched and built their underwater Remote Operated Vehicle (R.O.V.) in less than eight days and in only 8 hours in total.
Students learned about engineering, teamwork, and how to present. Captain Perez of the U.S. Navy conducted an in-depth interview with the five SEAPERCH team members and wanted to meet all of the SRISD STEMS students in attendance.
The SEAPERCH team looks forward to competing next year for they will have had plenty of time to re-design their robot and have more practice time. Until then, STEMS students will be busy working on other STEMS based activities which will include building a greenhouse, competing at the Regional Science Fair, learning about wildlife science, marine science and environmental science.
