Marcus the Millionaire
- Updated: December 11, 2015
If Marcus could earn a dollar for every word he read he’d be a millionaire. Unfortunately, that is not the case. He won’t be able to take lavish vacations or eat at the finest restaurants, but through his travels as a reader, he has gone to places unimaginable by anyone. He has slayed dragons, battled Cyclops, and sailed to cities of gold through his readings.
Marcus Cantu, 4th grader, is the first student at Tony Gonzalez Elementary in Santa Maria, Texas to join the Million Word Club. He reached his goal on Sunday November 29, 2015. Marcus has such an immense love for reading, which becoming a millionaire was never a doubt. He first took an interest in reading while in the 3rd grade, when his parents often encouraged him to read.
They would buy him his favorite books, prompting him to read continuously. He is such a rapid reader, that he began venturing out into different genres. His favorite books include Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Goosebumps. Marcus is such a remarkable student, that his drive and tenacity to succeed is evident through his work. He wants to attend the University of Texas in Austin, and says he would like to become a doctor. Without a doubt, Marcus will indeed accomplish what he sets out to do.
As for now, Marcus continuous to read. His goal is to reach 5 million words by the end of the school year. “I think I can make it because I am always interested in books. I don’t watch movies. I read instead,” states Marcus.
