Tonie’s Flower Shop comes to La Feria

When Antonia Garcia, or “Tonie, as her friends call her, began learning the art of making beautiful bouquets in Kay’s Bouquet in Harlingen, she never imagined she would have her own flower shop on Main Street in La Feria one day. “It’s the realization of a dream,” she exclaimed. “I have loved flowers all my life, and now it’s my business. I can’t believe it.”

“I was fortunate that Sylvia, owner of the flower shop, took me under her wing and taught me how to make beautiful flower arrangements for all occasions,” she said. After several years with Kay’s Bouquet, she joined Lulu’s Flowers in La Feria, where she was the manager, florist and delivery girl. “You name it–I did it,” she laughed.

With that experience, she opened her own small shop in Mercedes. When the opportunity to move her business to La Feria came about in June of this year, she said, “I just jumped at it, and it’s been a great experience.”

“I’m happy that many of my long-time friends and customers have found me,” she said, adding, “Each customer has a different reason for flowers. I try to make something special for each occasion.”

“My specialty is working with fresh flower arrangements,” she continued, and added, “flowers can say things when words fail–I like to put a smile on my customers’ faces–be it for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, quinceaneras, or ‘just because,’”

“But, then there are also times of sorrow,” she added. “In those moments, flowers can say just the right thing with an encouraging, ‘get well’ or express sincere condolences in time of loss.”

Antonia was born and raised in Camargo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Then in 1990, she met the man who was to become her husband in Rio Grande City. She and Martin were soon married and now have four children–Abigail, Giselle, Martin, Jr., and Pablo. La Feria is now the family’s hometown.
