- Updated: June 17, 2016

Ground Breaking Ceremony for Memorial Monument: Officials and dignitaries dig in for the ground-breaking held on Memorial Day, May 30, 2016. This site will be a place to commemorate our veterans and their contributions to our Nation.
“A Monument the City will be proud of”
The City of La Feria extended an invitation for veterans, their families, city officials and the general public to the ground breaking ceremony for the new La Feria Veterans Memorial Monument to be built on the corner of Commercial Avenue and Main Street.
The ceremony took place Monday, Memorial Day, May 30 at 10:00 a.m. The weather was good and a good number of interested citizens attended the program.
The function began with the playing of TAPS by Mr. Ignacio Garcia Galvez, LFEDC and LFIDC Board Member. It was followed by an invocation by Bishop Ronaldo Ortiz, Pastor of the La Feria Christian Center. Gus Garcia, Choir Director of the First United Methodist Church sang the National Anthem for the occasion.
La Feria Mayor Olga H. Maldonado welcomed the guests and recognized several guests in the audience. She said, “We have come to honor those who made the supreme sacrifice by the construction of this monument. These braves soldiers left behind all they knew to fight on foreign soils. Many came back with the memories of their buddies who fell in battle. It is very proper that we give tribute to those men with this Veterans Memorial Monument.
“We want to give our thanks to all these veterans and their families assembled here for this Ground-breaking ceremony,” she said. Mayor Pro-Tem, Esmeralda Lozano, gave a very appropriate Memorial Day Recitation for the occasion.

City and American Legion officials at ground breaking: Terry Schroeder, Legion officer; Harlan Lucas, Post Commander; Eric Hoff, City Commissioner.
City Manager Sunny Philip expressed thanks to those present and said that we will have a beautiful monument at this location soon that will honor all our veterans of all wars and one that the city will be proud of.”
The La Feria Veterans Memorial Monument Committee said that their mission is to raise funds to build a Veterans Monument in the City of La Feria to honor veterans of the United States Military. The Committee is working with the City to begin in May 2016 and completion is expected by November 2016. This site will be a place to commemorate our veterans and their contributions to our Nation. The finished monument will be made of granite with memorial pavers, memorial benches and a beautiful landscape.
The members of the Veterans Memorial Monument Committee are: John Betancourt, Edward Cornelius, Raul Garate, Adam Gonzalez, Ramon Gonzalez, John Hernandez, John Hernandez, Jr., Joe Loya, Robert Ramos, Judge Arturo Salas, Charlie Villanueva, Jr and Lori Weaver.
