Lions Win District Opener Over Zapata 40 -37
- Updated: October 21, 2016
by Coach Jaime Acuna
The Lions began their opening district game versus the Zapata Hawks just as they had hoped, with a 40 – 37 win over the Hawks.
The Lion offense got on the board first when quarterback Jonathan Leija found Brandon Perez on a 47 yard pass for a touchdown. Zapata has always played the Lions tough throughout the years, so everyone knew it would be a tough fought game.
The Hawks would soon answer with a touchdown of their own to narrow the gap 7 – 6. The two teams would continue taking turns scoring as the game went on. The Lions would then score a much needed touchdown right before halftime to take a 21 – 14 lead heading into the third quarter.
The second half was much like the first half with touchdowns galore. When it was over, the Lions escaped with a 40 – 37 win over the Hawks.
Overall, the Lion offense accounted for 305 total yards of offense, with 251 yards coming from their rushing attack. The Lion defense did enough to secure the win and forced 3 turnovers for the game. With the win the Lions move their record to 5 – 1 overall and more importantly 1 – 0 in district. Good luck to the Lions on the rest of the season.
