Mad Science Night at Dominguez Elementary
- Updated: October 21, 2016
Special to La Feria News
Dominguez Elementary hosted its annual Mad Science Night this past Monday, October 3rd and put the Mad in Mad Science Night. Mrs. Najar got into character as she created her annual Mad Science Lab and gift shop. Dominguez students tuned in to their inner scientist as they dressed up and gave hands-on lessons to the public.
This year Dominguez Elementary partnered with the Texas Space Grant Consortium and NASA Johnson Space Center. Mrs. Margaret Baguio, director of the Texas Space Grant Consortium out of the University of Texas in Austin and affiliated with NASA, gave Dominguez Elementary 32 hands-on activities and assisted Dominguez in supplying half of the materials needed to run the stations. Mrs. Baguio also brought her NASA issued meteorite and lunar samples whose booth had to be manned by a Lunar/Meteorite Sample Certified Teacher, such as Mrs. Colson, as well as security at all times.
Dominguez Elementary also borrowed an Apollo Helmet and EVA (extravehicular activity) Glove from the NASA Johnson Space Center Exhibit Warehouse with the assistance of Mr. Randy Gordon, Exhibits Coordinator. Dominguez students were even allowed to wear the helmet and glove to take pictures. When Mrs. Colson arrived at the exhibit warehouse in Houston for pick up, Mr. Steve Burnett graciously gave Dominguez Elementary NASA bags and balloons for experiments, such as two wheeled vehicle. He also donated commemorative coins for Space Lotteria, as well as fake tattoos for Mad Science Night.
Dominguez Elementary’s Mad Science Night’s success couldn’t have been possible without the outstanding help and support from its leader, Mrs. Castillo and staff. Teachers from across all subjects came together to make Mad Science Night possible. Reading, math, and social studies teachers, as well as science teachers, all manned a booth. Dominguez’s custodial staff did an excellent job setting up and Ms. Norma Molina did an amazing job making the astronaut and rocket cutup stands for pictures. A big Thank You to everyone who was a part of this event and we look forward to another great year in 2017.
