The Works of Late UTRGV Art Professor Carlos Gomez To Be On Display at BMFA

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art is holding a Carlos G. Gómez Retrospective on Nov. 10, to celebrate the artist’s more than 30 years as a  professor of art at UTRGV and its legacy institution, UT Brownsville.

Gomez died in January 2016, after succumbing to brain cancer. He had served as chair of the art department at UTB before the creation of UTRGV.

His work was inspired by Mexican-American culture, heritage and immigration. Born in Mexico City, he grew up in Brownsville and got his bachelor’s degree in art from Pan American University in Edinburg.

Over the years, Gómez cemented his legacy as a productive, influential and passionate artist in the Lower Valley, mentoring and inspiring students at UTB, and later at UTRGV.

“I was fortunate enough to know Carlos Gómez for 10 years as a student, and then to have him as colleague, and friend,” said UTRGV Lecturer of Art Alejandro Macias.

Macias said he is honored to be able to curate this retrospective of Gomez’s body of work.

“Brownsville was his home,” Macias said, “and his colorful, powerful work deserves to be shown.”

The opening of the Gomez Retrospective coincides with the Museum’s 10th Annual Gala Reception, 6:30-11 p.m. Nov. 10.

After the reception, the retrospective will be open to the public. The exhibition will include work that spans Gomez’s lifelong career, as well as tribute work from other artists.
