Los Angeles Del Sur
Performing at 5:45 pm on Saturday, Feb. 25th
Joe Sanchez, accordionist, vocalist and founder of Los Angeles del Sur traces his musical heritage to the 1930’s when his grandfather organized dances in La Feria, a small community in the the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Joe’s father became a musician and tells his own stories of riding on horseback through the mesquite underbrush with an accordion strapped to his back.
They were a family of migrant farm workers, and Joe traveled north following the crop circuit. After a hard week’s he noticed how the field workers danced to the conjunto music of the button accordion and 12-String bajo sexto. It was the music of his family roots in the Valley, and it wasn’t long before Joe began making his own music. As he puts it, “we always had an accordion lying around the house.”
In 1978 Sanchez formed Los Angeles del Sur. His father joined the group to play bajo Sexto and at the age of 82 still plays the with the band. Joe’s brother Larry Covers engineering duties and also plays the bajo sexto. Other members of the band are Jose Luis Rodriguez at the drums and vocals, Ruben Luna on the bass and Fred Trejo also on drums.
Los Angeles del Sur have been featured in Washington D.C. as part of the Smithsonian’s Rio Grande/Rio Bravo Basin project, and they have appeared many times at the Narciso Matinez Conjunto Festival in San Benito. They were the first and only band to perform at the first Fiesta de La Feria, and they have been playing there every year.
For Joe Sanchez and Los Angeles del Sur, the conjunto music of the Rio Grande Valley remains very much a working class family experience.
Tejano Boys
Performing at 7:00 pm on Saturday, Feb. 25th
Tejano Boys was started in November, 1997 in Brownsville, TX. by Joe Anzaldua III around the talents of his youngest son Oscar Anzaldua (Bajo sexton/Vocals) and grandson Rick Garza Jr.(Accordion/Vocals). Joe Anzaldua III knew that he had something here with his young talents and decided to surround them with a bass player and a drummer to form a band and with that Tejano Boys was born. Practicing in a little garage in a neighborhood (Las Prietas) in Brownsville, Joe Anzaldua III and the Tejano Boys started working on developing their own style of music. Since then the band has had the pleasure of playing with several musicians at bass and drums but the heart of the band remains with Oscar and Rick. Joe Anzaldua III knew his son and grandson (Oscar Anzaldua & Rick Garza Jr.) were special and he wasn’t wrong. Since then Joe Anzaldua III has passed but Oscar and Rick are still going strong, keeping their Dad’s dream alive!
The band consist of 4 musicians which are Rick Garza Jr. on accordion and vocals, Oscar Anzaldua on bajo-sexto and vocals, Ito Longoria on bass and vocals, and Eric Garza on drums. The Tejano Boys have played all over the state as well as Mexico and the U.S. We were first signed with Discos MM and produced 4 albums (Nunca Te Olvidare, No Seas Mala, Hermosisima Mujer, No Me Se Rajar) followed by an independent album we released titled Mejor Que Nunca. We are currently signed with Freddie Records and have produced 2 albums (Es Todo Tuyo, Simplemente Para Ti) with them, working on a third at the moment (7 CD’s in total).
