City Approved Agreement with Cameron County for Fire Services

The La Feria city commission held a regularly scheduled city meeting on Tuesday, April 25.
After following the usual protocol of the invocation, pledge, & determination of quorum, Mayor Olga Maldonado opened the floor for public comments. Adam Keith went before the commission to express his concerns regarding slander and defamation of character.
“I’d like to congratulate everybody that is stepping out into the community right now running for office, but I’d just like for you all to understand and believe that those words [slander, defamation of character] have meaning,” said Keith.
After the approval of the minutes of the previous city meeting held on April 11, the commission considered and approved an agreement with Cameron County for fire services.
“Since the county does not have firefighting services, they depend on small communities to render those services. In the past, the city has been partnered with the Cameron County Emergency Services District No.1 and this is a continuation again of our efforts to help those in rural areas,” said city manager, Jaime Sandoval.
Planning Director, Paula Rodriguez, went before the commission as they considered the approval of a resolution accepting the donation of 0.63 acres from Harold L. Wilson Jr. and Cynthia Bryscki. The area is located down White Ranch Rd. E.E Evans subdivision, block 13. The resolution was approved.
The commission also approved the final plat of the Lobitas Estates No. 4 Subdivision.
Before the meeting was adjourned, the commission had a discussion regarding the city’s operation maintenance and management of the water and wastewater facilities and lift stations. According to the city manager, in January, the city advertised to solicit interested firms to submit Statements of Qualification for the operation, maintenance and management of the city’s water wastewater and lift station facilities. The only proposal received came from Severn Trent, who provided the city with a free evaluation.
Severn Trent will share their findings at the next city meeting scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, at 6:30 PM in the city commission meeting room located at 115 E. Commercial Avenue.
