The La Feria Lions traveled to Rio Grande City last Friday night with the hopes of capturing their second District Championship in the last three years. That’s exactly what they did with a 30 – 9 victory over the Gators.
The Lions came in focused and ready to play. The offense started things off with a 71 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dorian Hernandez to wide receiver Manny Sanchez on the first play of the game to give the Lions the early lead. The Gators would respond with a touchdown of their own to tie the game at 7 – 7 in the first quarter.
Both teams matched each other play by play until the Lions scored with only seconds left before halftime when Hernandez found receiver Eric Alegria on a 24 yard touchdown pass to give the Lions a 14 – 9 lead at halftime. The Lions went into halftime with the lead, but also without their fearless leader Julian Trevino who was injured on a long pass reception at the end of the second quarter.
Players were emotional at halftime and knew they had to play inspired football to win the game. Running back, Darius Hernandez scored on a six yard touchdown run and kicker Tony Torres added to the Lions lead on a 37 yard field goal to increase the lead to 23 – 9. The Lions then added another touchdown when the kickoff team forced a fumble and Bobby Fraga recovered the ball to make the score 30 – 9.
The Lion offense had a great night with 313 total yards of offense while the defense was dominating by forcing 3 turnovers and holding the Gators to under 200 yards of offense. La Feria linebacker Victor Luna shined as he had 18 total tackles and recorded 4 tackles for loss.
Defensive ends Aja Hernandez totaled 14 tackles and 2 sacks while Nico Vasquez pitched in with 13 tackles and 4 tackles for loss. With the win, the Lions are the District Champions and go into the playoffs as the #1 seed for 16 – 4A.
