Chamber of Commerce Offers Two New Scholarships

Two scholarships are being made available to graduating seniors with proven records of community involvement.
The La Feria Chamber of Commerce has made a commitment to provide two $500 scholarships to the students and the deadline to apply is this Friday, May 4th.
Alma Martinez, spokeswoman for the chamber, said the board of directors and staff with the organization, decided to give out the financial incentives as a way to give back to the community.
“This is the first time the chamber is doing this,” she said. “One of the requisites is that a candidate is an active member of the community.”
Although most scholarships are given out based on academic performance and to a class’s top 10 percent, the chamber is doing away with that.
Martinez said they will look for a number of things such as volunteer work, helping out in local events and participating in fund raising events.
The scholarships will be awarded on May 27 and an informative meeting with the two students and their parents will be held June 7.
