Deer Population Culled in Port Mansfield

In an effort to control the cattle fever tick, a herd of white-tailed deer was culled in Port Mansfield.
The culling was done with high powered rifles and under the supervision of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Ron Mills, the director with the PM Navigation District, said about 100 deer were culled during a June operation.
Mills said the cattle fever issue and the overpopulation of white-tailed in and around the port has become a public health issue
He said he counted more than 400 deer last year and the numbers have increased ever since.
Oscar Castaneda, a warden with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, said several culling are held each year.
He said the culling are held around the airport and the local shooting range areas.
But the number of deer seen throughout this fishing community continue to grow.
