Special to La Feria News
On Tuesday, July 3rd, a luncheon was held to award scholarships to two La Feria students.
Brandy R. Vera, La Feria High School, was awarded the Norberto “Butch” Puente Memorial Scholarship. Brandy is the daughter of Ray Vera and Michelle Flores and will be attending Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
Jose Luis Guerrero, La Feria Academy School, was awarded the LFHS Alumni 1960 thru 1969 Scholarship. Jose Luis is the son of Marco and Perla Nava and will be attending Texas State Technical College in Harlingen.
Norbert “Butch” Puente was a student at La Feria High School.
Butch was a good hearted man who valued his friendships and loved to reminisce with old friends.
He hosted a family reunion at his home every year to promote unity and communication.
One of Butch’s passions was to encourage young adults, letting them know how important it was to continue their education after high school. To that end, the Puente family established the memorial scholarship in honor of his beliefs and to continue his passion for helping others.
The LFHS Alumni 1960-1969 Scholarship was established by La Feria Students of the 1960’s. These ten 1960 classes get together every 2-3 years for a Multi-Class Reunion at South Padre Island.
They gather to catch up, renew friendships and recall the events that made going to school at La Feria a unique experience.
