Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge Allows Bicycling for the Season
- Updated: August 17, 2018
Alamo, Texas— Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge will open the refuge for seasonal biking starting August 23rd, 2018 through December 22nd, 2018. This effort is part of a pilot program to evaluate visitor usage, interactions between diverse activities at the refuge, and the potential impacts (both positive and negative) of bicycling at Santa Ana.
In order to provide a positive experience to visitors at Santa Ana, new regulations have been instituted to allow bicycling, such as a bicycling permit, days of operation, speed limits, flow of traffic, etc. Three public meetings will take place during the week of August 20th to increase the public’s awareness of these regulations and expectations around this new use at Santa Ana. The public will also have an opportunity to ask questions to Service officials.
Public meetings will take place at the following locations and schedule: Texas A&M Health Science Center, 2101 S. McColl Rd. McAllen, TX 78503 on August 20, 2018 at 6:00 pm; LRGV Development Council, CIEDO Room, Bldg D, 301 W Railroadin Weslaco, TX 78596 on August 22, 2018 at 10:00 am; Pharr Memorial Library, North Star Room, 2nd floor, 121 E Cherokee Ave. in Pharr, TX 78577-4826 on August 22, 2018 at 6:00 pm.
