Cowboy Cook-off Coming Soon to Los Fresnos

The Los Fresnos’ second annual cowboy cook-off is a little more than two months away but organizers of the event are already firing up the grill in anticipation.
As many as 50 teams are expected to compete for thousands of dollars in prize money for the top brisket, pork spare ribs and chicken as well as pan de campo, fajitas and beans.
Jaime and Los Chamacos will kick off the lit the pit contest with a live concert the night before, or on Nov. 16.
The cook-off with take place Saturday, Nov. 17.
During Tuesday’s Sept. 11 meeting of Los Fresnos City Council, the municipal body approved sponsoring $1,500 for the cook-off.
A day earlier, the Community Development Corp. board also approved sponsoring the same amount.
Mike Todd, president of Los Fresnos Rodeo Committee, said the cook-off is getting a lot of response from cowboy chefs.
“We expect as many as 50 teams this year,” he said. ‘We had about 37 teams in 2017 and it did real well.”
Todd said they had more than 100 judges last year and encouraged anyone interested in participating to contact them.
Javier Mendez, a councilman, said he attended last year’s cook-off and it was a lot of fun.
He said the LFRC hopes to turn the cook-off into an annual event just as it has been doing with its PRCA-sanctioned rodeo that will mark its 30th year in 2019.
