Lionettes Drop Close Game to Rio Hondo

RIO HONDO – With 2:15 left in the game, the La Feria Lionettes basketball team found themselves in the midst of a comeback against district rival Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats.
Maggie Cavazos scored five straight points, including a three-pointer and layup that tied the game with 15 seconds left in regulation.
Guard Kayla Lowe had the ball in her hands for the potential game-winning shot but was off the front of the rim as time expired and led to overtime with the score 29-29.
In overtime, neither team would budge the scoreboard.
With 2:45 left in overtime, the Lady Bobcats opened the extra-time scoring with a layup followed by free throws that would stretch their lead.
More late free throws helped seal the win for the Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats, moving them to 2-0 in district play while the Lionettes fall to 1-1.
Maggie Cavazos led the Lionettes with 12 points and Aaliyah Steward pitched in six points.
For Rio Hondo, Taylor Gomez bucketed 16 points and Estella Garza pitched in five.
The Lionettes followed with a win over the Progreso Lady Red Ants, improving their record to 2-1 in district play.
