CORPUS CHRISTI – The La Feria Lions started off the second half of their regional semifinal matchup with the La Vernia Bears with a long kickoff return by Derrick Perez, in which the Lions used to score a few plays later.
The Bears defense proved to be a tough test for the Lions as La Feria ended their season losing 41-13.
The score didn’t reflect how close the game really was.
La Vernia opened the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown from quarterback Clayton Chadwick.
In the second quarter, found receiver on a 21-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0 heading into halftime.
With the Lions needing to make a move, La Feria’s Derrick Perez returned the second half kickoff all the way to the Bears’ thirty yard-line, which set up a rushing score by Avaishai Dickerson to make it 14-7.
La Vernia had other plans in mind.
With the score being 21-13 in the fourth quarter, Bears’ Chadwick broke loose for a 67-yard run to set up a 19-yard touchdown on the next play, putting the game out of reach for the Lions.
The Lions finished their season 11-2 with an undefeated district campaign and five-game winning streak.
The icing on the cake for the Lions’ season is the accomplishment of reaching the third round of the playoffs, something not done in ten years.
