For those who like to collect toys, super heroes characters and other unique things, there is now a store in town than can take care of that.
Called Retro Collectibles, the shop has been open for about a month and held a brief ceremony to mark its introduction to the community on Saturday, Nov. 24.
Owners Joe and Norma Becerra said they decided to open the store to give people the opportunity to shop right here in town.
“We specialize in retro toys,” she said. “We have new, used, reproduction and collectibles.”
The Becerras said they started two years ago with such business but through the Internet and attending Harlingen Market Days, held the first Saturday of a month.
“This is something we both enjoy,” Becerra said. “It began as a hobby and we have this store today.”
The opening event was attended by several dozen people including Mayor Olga H. Maldonado, city council members Julian Guevara and Esmeralda Lozano.
Lozano said she was glad to see a resident taking the step that the Becerras did.
“It’s good to see people doing such things in life,” she said. “It takes courage to do something like this and I congratulate you.”
Harlingen resident Luis Canales brought his son Lucas to checkout Retro Collectibles.
He said he knows the Becerras and wanted to see what the store has.
“I collect quite a few things myself,” he said. ”You have to see my office. It’s full of Legos and superheroes stuff.”
Becerra said they now open Wednesday through Saturday, but will adjust the schedule as time goes by.
She said they plan to have cereal mornings on Saturday as well as other events once they settle in.
