A La Feria high school student has been excelling playing softball and even threw a one-hitter game.
Faith McKenzie, a 17 year old junior, has been instrumental in taking the team to the top.
In 2018, she was named all-district pitcher. A year earlier, McKenzie was named all district center field as an individual player.
With a South Texas KAOS team, the team took first place at Seguin softball nationals in 2018, and third place at VTD national tournament in 2017.
McKenzie threw a one-hitter game during a game La Feria High School played against Donna North on Feb. 12. The team won 19 to zero.
She said she started playing softball and beanball since she was four and would like to play softball at the college level after high school.
The junior student plays the clarinet with the school marching band and she is an officer with the Future Farmers of America and has been showing a lamb in several livestock shows.
“I want to further my education in animal science,” she said. “My grades have placed me in the top ten percent in my class. I am also a member of the National Honor Society.”
Her father, Freddie, said he is really proud of her.
And her coach, Daryl Gonzalez, said McKenzie is fundamentally a sound player both as an individual and as a team player.
“Faith has an important role on the team,” he said.
“She is a leader for the younger players on and off the field and I strongly believe she has the tools to play at the next level.”
