Onion Harvest in Full Swing in La Feria

The Rio Grande Valley is home to dozens of agricultural crops.
The most dominant products are sorghum, cotton, corn, sugar cane and winter vegetables.
But another farm product grown regionally is onion.
Willacy County used to produce the first and largest such crop to the point of giving the region the distinction of being called the onion capital of the United States.
But did you know that here in La Feria onions are cultivated in sizeable numbers?
On FM 506, harvesting the pungent produce has been going in full swing.
Dozens of farm workers were seen last week cutting the top of the onions before they place them inside large plastic crates.
The onions are grown by an Uvalde farmer.
Once harvested, the produce goes to a warehouse on Highway 281, and shipped to places all over the United States, a field supervisor said.
