- Updated: May 17, 2019
MERCEDES – U.S. News & World Report recently published its 2019 Best High Schools Rankings, in which all four South Texas Independent School District (STISD) high schools rank among the best in the state and nation.
In the state rankings, The Science Academy of South Texas (Science Academy) in Mercedes ranked 21st, while South Texas High School for Health Professions (Med High) in Mercedes ranked 56th, South Texas Academy for Medical Professions (Medical Academy) in Olmito ranked 64th, and South Texas Business, Education & Technology Academy (BETA) in Edinburg ranked 71st. Out of more than 17,000 public high schools ranked nationally, Science Academy ranked 151st, Med High ranked 346th, Medical Academy ranked 433rd, and BETA ranked 506th.
According to U.S. News, this year the publication nationally ranked roughly six to seven times as many schools as in its previous edition. It also used a revised methodology, which incorporates six ranking factors, each weighted to produce an overall score that the ranking is based on. Those factors include: College readiness (30% of the ranking); College curriculum breadth (10%); Reading and math proficiency (20%); Reading and math performance (20%); Underserved student performance (10%); and Graduation rate (10%).
STISD is comprised of four magnet high schools – South Texas Business, Education & Technology Academy (BETA), South Texas High School for Health Professions (Med High), South Texas Academy for Medical Professions (Medical Academy), and The Science Academy of South Texas (Science Academy) – as well as two middle schools – Rising Scholars Academy of South Texas (Rising Scholars) and South Texas Preparatory Academy (STPA). BETA is undergoing a name and program change and will become South Texas ISD World Scholars for the 2019-2020 school year. Additional information regarding the transformation is available at www.stisdworldscholars.com.
All campuses are tuition-free and serve students from Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy Counties. For more information, call 1-800-21STUDY or visit www.stisd.net.
