A recent grass fire apparently caused by a train caused reason to the worried as plumes of smoke could be seen from all corners of La Feria.
“It looked as if the entire city was on fire,” Fire Chief David Phinney said about the Thursday, May 23, fire. “But everything got under control.”
He said several blocks from behind the U.S. Postal Service to Beddoes Road were affected by the fire.
Phinney said a number of fires were reported at the same time to the point requiring assistance from the Mercedes and Harlingen Fire departments.
“We were able to protect all structures that were threatened,” he said. “The cause of the fire has not been determined.”
