Lions Stadium Gets New Track, Turf

The clock is ticking at La Feria Independent School District Lions Stadium.
That is because the district football team will play its first home game this Friday, Sept. 6 and the hope is a renovation project to have a new turf and track are completed on time.
The district allocated $1.7 million for the project but will spend about $100,000 less, or $1.6 million.
Hellas Construction of Austin, a company that builds sport complexes, fields and stadiums, is handling the project.
Reynaldo Quiroga, the project’s supervisor, said building the new turf is coming along.
He said the artificial turf is being built using larger rubber pellets mixed with stones for better cushion.
Another material being used is called eco turn and is 20 degrees cooler than conventional rubber.
Quiroga said they started building the turf this past week.
After that, he said another crew will work on the track.
Cathy Lee Hernandez, the district’s superintendent, said the track and turf projects are being done with money the district had already.
In other words, she said, the project is being done without raising taxes.
