Texas Parks and Wildlife Awards City $1 Million

State Representative Oscar Longoria Instrumental in Funds Meant to Improve Library

There were plenty of smiles at the last meeting of La Feria City Commission.

And there was a good reason for that as State Rep. Oscar Longoria, whose District 35 covers this area of Cameron County, presented the city a check for $1 million to be used for parks and recreation projects.

Longoria said $1 million might not sound like a lot of money for a city like Houston but for La Feria it’s significant.

“I am always a big supporter of small communities,” he said, “and you have been one of those communities on my list.”

Longoria, who is serving his fourth term in office after being first elected in 2013, has offices in La Feria, Edcouch and Penitas.

Longoria said the $1 million was awarded to the city by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.

He also said he was able to secure $1.9 million to improve public libraries in small towns along the Texas border.

Some of that money will go to the La Feria Bailey H. Dunlap Memorial Library.

The check was presented during the city council meeting on Tuesday, Oct.1.

Mayor Olga Maldonado thanked the state representative on behalf of the city.
