The La Feria Lions have reached a mile stone when it comes to playing football this year.
The Lions ended the regular season undefeated and, by doing so, the team ended up with a Perfect 10, winning six district and four non-district games.
They won their last game by defeating the Hidalgo Pirates 28-12.
The Lions scored 0 points in the first quarter, seven in both the second and third quarters and 14 points in the fourth quarter.
The Pirates scored zero points in the first, second and third quarters and 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Just last week, the Lions were ranked 296th statewide and 26th in 4A-1 district ranking.
Coach Oscar Salinas credited the accomplishment to hard work from everybody – the coaches, the players and the support staff.
“We all work hard,” he said. “We finished the season 10-0.”
Salinas said this is first time the Lions ended up with a Perfect 10.
Last year, the team won the district championship with 9-1 record and 8-2 the year before.
“I feel very proud of our team,” he said. “There are only three undefeated teams in the whole state and we are one of them.”
Cathy Lee Hernandez, the district superintendent, said she is extremely proud of the Lions achievement.
“They are undefeated,” she said in an earlier interview. “This is great for the district.”
She said such an accomplishment brings the whole district together.
“Whenever you have a winning team,” Hernandez said, “it impacts the district culture.”
By that, she means it has a positive impact on both the parents and on the students’ attendance, grades and on the overall health of the district.
Mrs. Chairez, the high school principal, said everybody is excited about the team record.
“We have won district championships three years in a row, but have not been 10- 0,” she said. “We have won back to back championships and this is great.”
The Lions were off last week and were waiting for the result of the Pleasanton-La Vernia game to find out who they will face for the bi-district championship game.
On Wednesday, Nov, 6, the school had a tailgate party, and a ribbon cutting of the new track and turf of Lions Stadium.
